Can business exist without art? And vice versa? Hamlet could have asked these questions, but today Demyan Om, the creator of the "Philosophical Garden", and Nikolay Demchenko, the co-founder of the law firm "Pravoe Delo", the initiator of the creation of the Association of Graduates of the Kyiv-Mohyla Business School, spoke about it.

Join the conversation and find out where the peaceful flow of reflection can take two thoughtful people.

Common language

How do businessmen differ from people of art? Actually, practically nothing. They breathe the same air, walk on the same ground, communicate with the same words, using related concepts and meanings. We can say that they are already endowed with a common language. However, they do not always have the opportunity to use it.

Take, for example, the latest premiere from MARVEL. "Avengers: The Finale" has collected almost $ 3 billion at the box office. Now let's speculate. Is earning a business? Quite. At the same time, a whole team of representatives of the cinema was working on the film, wasn't it? In this case, art is tightly intertwined with commerce, complementing each other. There is no need to imagine some special common language created by sweat and blood. After all, in this case, we risk unnecessarily focusing on the differences. In fact, people of great (read — world) art speak the language of big business, and vice versa. The first one does not work in the modern world without large investments, and the second one does not work without a creative approach at all levels.

In Ukrainian realities, everything is a little different. It's more about finding common ground between business and art. The formation of a field within which they are able to see each other and start a dialogue.

When the representatives of the two worlds, separated for some reason, sit down at the common negotiating table, a new stage in the development of the country's economy will begin. In addition, the level of self-representation of Ukraine in the international arena will increase qualitatively.

In general, these two worlds are created by different people, methods and technologies in a relatively closed community, but the output is something surprisingly combined and complementary.

Creative industries today give the modern viewer products so impressive that they eventually become the goal of cultural development of society.

Philosophy and education system

Over the past 150 years, the humanitarian block of knowledge has practically disappeared from our higher education system. In particular, philosophy, history and a number of sociological sciences, which were previously studied without fail, were removed.

What do we expect from business people starting their business in 20-22 years?

They replaced the study of these sciences with communication with older entrepreneurs and non-fiction literature, which gives cool tools, but does not teach thinking and attracting attention.

The vision of such people is limited by certain limits. This is especially true of the skill to work for the long term.
"Have you noticed sparks in the eyes of a musician who is passionate about his work when he talks about music? His passion and love for his work is very easy to feel. Have you often seen such a spark in the eyes of a teacher explaining his subject to children?"

About education

There are several important things that affect the formation of personality. This is, first of all, DNA; the place where a person grew up, his environment and family; his own efforts that a person makes to improve life.

In addition, these are relationships with people, and films that left a deep imprint. Received and, in particular, not received knowledge. Books that have never been read. The latter could leave a particularly deep mark: a certain void, which was subsequently filled with randomly selected information from the outside.

Simply put, a person's personality and thinking abilities are formed in the first eight to nine years of life.

If you look at the lists of subjects that are taught in schools and universities, through your fingers, you can note a lot of useful things. For example, a good selection of humanitarian subjects, which includes music, natural history, the basics of culture, and drawing.

If you take off the rose-colored glasses, in most cases it turns out that children love these lessons solely for the opportunity to do nothing.

Why is that? Why don't teachers at school teach you to love art?
About what is missing in "Management for beginners"

Returning to businessmen, we cannot say that the whole range of humanities influences success. There are many nuances here. Sometimes the simplest schemes can work successfully in business for years: "bought - sold - took money." And where it is simple - there is a head in order to "eat into it".

In the end, it all comes down to the mental satisfaction of a particular person. Is he in love with his business, does it bring him joy?

There is a whole category of managers and top managers for whom the head is a strong working tool. They are the ones who have the habit of thinking in advance about where the development of their business is going, and what it may be like in decades.

In such people, first of all, an interest in studying and mastering those possibilities of the mind that you will not read about in "Management for beginners" is included.

In addition, this is a matter of civil liability. A person who thinks and reads, even without being the owner of a company, already has a deep degree of responsibility for the world around him.

Such a person once overcomes inertia and becomes the one who sees the problem and takes steps to solve it. This active position brings us to the term "civil society".

"If someone is engaged in business, he should develop his team, because that's what people came to him for."

Demyan Om
A few words about the philosopher-businessman

Let's be honest. Our state does not like to participate in the problems of society.

Agree, it would be a tragic waste of time to try to re-educate the state. It is much more effective to create an initiative from below. For example, to form a separate organization that is able to implement the project from start to finish. Then also measure the results in a short time.

In the presence of civil responsibility, the institution of patronage is born. The roots of this phenomenon in Western Europe go back to the Enlightenment.

The philosopher of that time knew several languages, was a translator, writer and publisher, an influential person in the city. He often had his own workshop, students.
Being rich, the thinker usually built schools, theaters and libraries to suit his needs, thereby developing the architecture of the city. He was an active patron of the arts, helping to develop art.

This position inspired politicians and businessmen. Therefore, even without special talents, they sought to get a good education, study philosophy, and invest in art.
About the Institute of Patronage

When an institution has only one patron at its disposal, then, paradoxically, it is better not to work with him. The fact is that for the system, one source of income is always worse than several. One source is a direct road to monopoly.

After all, patronage pursues not only material goals. And you also need to answer for yourself what is more important: to satisfy the needs here and now, or to leave a mark in the history of art.
